Listen Up: Vashti's Revenge!
If you're ready to get into the Purim zone and hear some powerful women's voices, don't miss Iranian Jewish singer Galeet Dardashti perform Vashti's Revenge, from her new CD, The Naming.
"The Queen of Sheba's shaven legs. A witch's bitter prophecy. The female superheroes who saved Moses. These stories make up The Naming, singer and composer Galeet Dardashti's exploration of the little-known lives of the Bible's phantom women." [read on...]
"Of Persian Jewish descent, Dardashti unites the Persian classical music that made her grandfather an icon in Iran with her family's deep connection to Jewish poetry and song, creating music that springs from where the midrash meets midwifery, where modal melody meets sleek modernity.
"To preview The Naming's upcoming release and celebrate Purim, the Jewish answer to Carnival, Dardashti will perform Vashti's Revenge on March 5 at New York City's Santos Party House, joined by the vigorous grace of Syren Modern Dance and projections by video artist Lustre, along with special musical guests. Schmooze and booze with characters from The Naming, who come to life courtesy of Storahtelling: Jewish Ritual Theater. DJ Acidophilus begins the evening spinning Middle Eastern/Mediterranean sounds."
