Letters from the Front

We read all sorts of reports in the news about what's going on in Israel, but hearing stories from the people who live there offers not only a different perspective, but a more personal and immediate connetion to the country and the people living in it.

Following is an excerpt from a recent email I received from a friend who lives near Jerusalem: I just wanted to send a little report of how things are in Israel with all of the attacks that you have been hearing about. Day to day life is business as usual but there are little things that we do differently. [read on...]

For example, in order to support and help the people in Sderot, every week people order Challot from the Sderot bakery which are delivered Friday morning. We have heard that the Sderot bakery hired a few new employees because of the increased demand. One of our neighbors works at Nefesh B'Nefesh and they rented office space in Sderot and people take turns going there and working from that office, and in the course of the day buying lunch in Sderot and doing some shopping. Even people who don't work for Nefesh B'Nefesh but work by computer go down and use the office as a show of support.

One of the boys killed in the Merkaz HaRav terrorist attack was from Neve Daniel. It is really too horrible to even talk about. There were tons of people at the shiva house.

Here also people were trying to think of what is an appropriate response but the answer was not as clear as in the case of Sderot where we can help the people economically. Last Wednesday night, I went with Netanel and we spent an hour learning Torah in the Merkaz HaRav Beit Midrash (study hall.) The yeshiva where I work in the morning, Netiv Aryeh, decided to bring all their students that night to learn there until midnight as a way of showing support. You can still see the bullet holes. We try to do what we can.

That's my update. Life in general is moving along fine and all is well with the family.
Happy Purim
