Ah, summer.
The school-year calendar seems ingrained in our bodies and minds long after we’ve handed in our last homework assignments, so relish the joy and freedom associated with these languorous days.
Reconnect with your body by feeling air, water, grass on your limbs. Find yourself a wide open space and breathe deeply. Eat ice cream. And catch as many sunsets as you can; they help you be still and present and in awe of the beauty of each day.
Baby Things We Love: Bath Apron
So smart! My brother bought this Stay-Dry Bath Apron & Towel for us after watching me attempt to bathe the baby without (a) getting soaked myself, (b) yelling for someone to help me get James out of the tub, and (c) insisting yet again that there had to be an easier way to do this and if someone hadn't invented it yet I was going to have to do it myself. Welcome to the World!
With tremendous joy we welcome the littlest addition to the Kosher Hostess family, James Atticus Davey! Born on Rosh Chodesh Adar 1, James rang in the new month and certainly increased the joy of everyone around him. May he be blessed with health, love, laughter, and his own unique way of contributing to the world.
Letters from the Front
We read all sorts of reports in the news about what's going on in Israel, but hearing stories from the people who live there offers not only a different perspective, but a more personal and immediate connetion to the country and the people living in it.
Following is an excerpt from a recent email I received from a friend who lives near Jerusalem: I just wanted to send a little report of how things are in Israel with all of the attacks that you have been hearing about. If the open road is still calling you, you may want to give those jogging shoes another try once you've read Cameron Aiken's guide to running for the "Type B" personality. [read on...]
Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble
This sweet, seemingly seasonal dessert can be made year-round thanks to the miracle of frozen fruit. It’s a fun alternative to the more traditional apple crumble, and can be served room temperature or warm, topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Blackberry Limeade
This refreshing limeade is a real treat on a warm summer evening. It can be enjoyed on its own but I especially like it once it’s mixed with a light, sparkling wine. The juicy blackberries pair perfectly with the mouth-puckering limes.
Roasted Corn and Tomato Salad
This is a wonderful summer salad. It can be made ahead of time because it keeps well in the refrigerator, especially in the summer when the corn and tomatoes are fresh. It’s best when you roast the corn on your BBQ, although this will make the corn "meat" instead of parve, so you should omit the cheese from the recipe. If you prefer a parve dish, simply use a parve grill pan or prepare the corn in the oven.
